Winter Skin

shared with the skin of trees
sun exposed compositions
onto sheets of paper
long shadows into silk ribbon
velvet in certain kinds of light
only winter knows
whispers recorded in a book of wishes

Mouth of the river again
The calligraphy of trees
leaning toward something
or maybe just tired
Too many flimsy metaphors
Yet the mouth can hold
and does withdold so much

Motherhouse, 2012-2024

Two of Burlington, Vermont’s most prominent religious instutions: Mount Saint Mary’s Convent and Saint Joseph’s Orphanage. Pictures were made over 12 years, while both buildings were in transition.

Saint Joseph’s orphanage closed in the early 1980s before it was purchased by developer in 2015. The building is now waterfront condos. The Sisters vacated Mount Saint Mary’s in 2020, and as of 2024 it will become part of the adjoining catholic school, Mater Christi.
